Reader's Theatre

A fun, end-of-the-year activity, we performed some Reader's Theatre, "fractured fairy tale," skits for the Kindergarten kids.

DEAR Spring Bake Sale

To everyone who helped out during the final DEAR fundraiser of the year. 

To those who baked the cookies, in all their various shapes, which were a hit with the entire school. 

To the kids who help market and sell the goods over two frantic days. 

A thousand thanks! We raised over $400.00 for our four adopted organizations!

Persuasive Speeches

Congratulations on your fine work with the persuasive speeches, fifth grade! As speakers and speech writers you were impressive, and as an audience you were considerate and supportive. Yes, it was challenging work, but I do hope you enjoy the feeling that comes from a job well done. There really is nothing like it.

Mrs. Natalie Babbitt Responds!

For the fourth year in a row, Mrs.Natalie Babbitt, author of Tuck Everlasting, responded to letters we wrote to her following our study of her book. Among other things, she said:

"First, TUCK is not an easy book. I didn't mean for it to be easy -- I meant it to be full of the questions that I've always had, even before I started school, about everlasting life. And I know there is more than one way to look at the questions. Whatever you decide right now, you may change your minds as you go along. There isn't only one right answer. But I remember very well what it was like to be the age you are now, and I know very well that kids are not empty-headed dummies. Kids are people, people getting ready to take over the world when their turn comes. And kids are separate people, distinct from each other -- not just a lot of lives rolled together and all the same. Fifth grade is the last, best year of childhood. It was one of the happiest years of my very happy life. I hope are are at peace in it."

She also admitted that she did NOT like the movie made from her book, but she is more hopeful about -- breaking news! -- the upcoming Broadway musical based on the novel. Finally, she told us a something about her new novel, The Moon Over High Street.

It's exciting to hear from an author, and it's impressive that Wakefield students would attract her notice and that she would want to maintain a relationship with us.

DEAR Reading and Record Donations!

After five months of DEAR reading and various fundraisers, we're happy to report that 4th and 5th grades raised over $5,000 for the Robert Duvall Children's Fund and the American Childhood Cancer Organization.

A sincere round of applause to everyone involved in helping us to make a difference in the world once again!
